Seamless unicast/broadcast delivery

Mobile media services can be distributed over cellular networks like 3G and LTE, or over wide-area broadcast networks. Delivery over cellular networks in unicast mode, delivery over cellular networks in multicast/broadcast mode like MBMS, and delivery over wide-area broadcast networks are likely to have different advantages and optimal operation points. It is now a widely accepted concept that the combination of unicast and broadcast for mobile media delivery has the potential to combine the different advantages, avoiding the drawbacks.

The purpose of the project, created in 2009, was to assess more precisely when and how 3G/4G networks and broadcast networks should cooperate in practice to deliver audiovisual content (linear or on-demand or push) in the most efficient way, while providing a seamless user experience.

In May 2010, the work item published the white paper "Seamless unicast and broadcast services to meet increasing mobile TV and video consumption".

After this publication all work topic on seamless unicast and broadcast services has been transfered to the busines models wirk item. Consequently, the work of this work item was terminated.

The work item was chaired by Vincent Grivet, TDF.
