Welcome to bmcoforum

The “Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum” (bmcoforum) is an international non-profit organisation targeting to shape an open market environment for mobile broadcast services.
The more than 100 members of bmcoforum join forces to identify relevant content and services, support technology standardisation and implementation, as well as lobbying for spectrum and suitable regulatory framework, to accelerate commercial implementations of new user experiences in receiving broadcast services and initiating interactivity at mobile devices.

  • Qatar (2008 10 07)
    Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and Nokia Siemens Networks have signed a commercial mobile TV deployment contract based on DVB-H and OMA BCAST Smard Card Profile technology.
  • Jupiter Research (2008 10 07)
    While more than 330m mobile users worldwide will own broadcast TV enabled handsets by 2013 and spend $2.7 billion, less than 14% will opt for mobile pay TV services. Main revenues to be hit by free-to-air services.
  • Teligent Systems (2008 10 06)
    Telegent Systems plans selling its analog free-to-the-air TV handsets in Latin America, starting with Brazil and Mexico. 25 million devices are expected to ship in 2008 worldwide.
  • ATSC (2008 10 02)
    ATSC has approved Advanced Video Coding (H.264) for ATSC DTV transmission including ATSC M/H.
  • Latin America (2008 10 02)
    A newTVTelco Latam's report says, Latin America will have 21.3 million mobile digital TV handsets in use in 2013, among them 12.5 million in Brazil (FTA. ISDB-T) and 4.7 milllion in Mexico (FTA, ATSC MPH), but only 1.56 million subscribers of paid service for all technologies.

    The dealine for submission of proposals for the mobile TV tender has been extended to 16 November 2008.
  • France (2008 09 27)
    Mediatvcom has been selected by the 16 licensees for technical, legal and management support in order to establish the joint DVB-H multiplex operator.
  • 3 Italy/OmniBus (2008 09 25)
    3 Italia has installed OmniBus iTX-based facility allowing to produce and aggregate five original channels having automated ad insertion capability.
  • Germany (2008 09 25)
    Media regulators call Mobile 3.0 submitting outstanding contracts with broadcasters, MEDIA BROADCAST and sales partners until October.
  • Columbia (2008 09 23)
    The National Television Commission (CNTV) will amend TV regulation in an attempt to synchronize the rules with the other convergent services including DVB-H.
  • Viacccess/LG Electronics/ Enensys/Expway/Sagem Orga (2008 09 22)
    The companies partner for an end-to-end mobile TV solution based on OMA BCAST SmartCard profile.
  • Uruquay (2008 09 18)
    Mobile operator Ancel announced a DVB-H tests in Montevideo to be performed during this year and including around 100 users.
  • 3 Italy/Thomson (2008 09 16)
    3 Italia, has built a new operation centre for the mobile television services La3 TV, based on an integrated solution from Thomson including their ViBE encoder.
  • Discretix/castLabs (2008 09 15)
    Discretix and castLabs partner to offer combined mobile TV client/server solution for secure smart card/DRM profiles or IPDC 18Crypt
  • Iraq (2008 09 015)
    Alsumaria TV will provide 20 DVB-H based channel using the ENENSYS platform and Nagravision's microSD security solution.
  • Czech Republic (2008 09 15)
    T-Mobile Czech Republic selected SafeNet's SafeBSF SIM-based authentication system for its trial DVB-H platform.
  • 3 Italy/Alcatel-Lucent (2008 09 11)
    3 Italia will expand and optimize its DVB-H network by Alcatel-Lucent's DVB-H terrestrial transmitters, remote monitoring system and including network integration services, to increase the indoor and outdoor coverage, while optimizing network efficiency.
  • Argentina (2008 09 12)
    Antina´s CEO  ratified that his network is prepared for DVB-H, but, considering the telephones´ price he does not anticipate a development in the mobile business in the short term.
  • Market research group NSR (2008 09 11)
    Mobile TV and mobile video services offered over broadcast and unicast distribution are projected to grow to 566 million users in 2013. Global service revenues comprising subscription, advertisement and transactional revenue are projected to reach $9 billion by 2013.
  • Netherlands (2008 09 10)
    KPN has reached 10,000 subscribers to its DVB-H based MobileTV service. After LG and Samsung devices now the Nokia N96 will be available as well.
  • Hungary (2008 09 07)
    The DVB-H service will start later this year in and around Budapest (16% coverage). It will also be available in seven other larger cities and the area around Lake Balaton by the end of 2009, the coverage will be 30%, which will reach 50% by 2012.
  • TeleAnalytics (2008 09 05)
    On the basis of monthly adoption data for all commercial Mobile TV networks since May 2005 up until March 2008 or later, TeleAnalytics Mobile TV Tracking Service 5 calculates that by the end of 2008, the total number of mobile TV users globally will hit 51.6 million.
  • China (2008 09 03)
    The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) is said to consider establishing a CMMB operating company to help commercialise the CMMB mobile phone TV market.
  • Mexico (2008 09 02)
    Grupo Televisa successfully completed an ATSC-based mobile broadcast field tests in Mexico. The ATSC-compatible in-band mobile DTV signal to prototype LG devices was broadcasted using Harris' transmitter and exciter.
  • Alcatel-Lucent (2008 09 01)
    Alcatel-Lucent demonstrates enhanced video quality for DVB-SH broadcast mobile TV at IFA 2008
  • Brazil (2008 08 28)
    Brazilian regulator Anatel announced looking into the possibility of allocating VHF channel 13 for "digital TV portability" in the future, i.e. for mobile TV services.
  • USA (2008 08 27)
    MediaFLO USA Inc. added CNBC and MSNBC from NBC Universal as well as News Corp.’s Fox News to its FLO TV service.
  • Poland (2008 08 27)
    The Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) now expects a tender for mobile TV operator to be opened in October, with the winner announced two months later. The licence shall be valid until 2013 und include 2 multiplexes within 31 cities
  • Argentina (2008 08 26)
    The communications Secretary Office (Secom) analyzes the possibility to bid for UHF spectrum to be released upon the digitalization of TV channels for multimedia mobile services
  • Oman (2008 08 26)
    Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has launched a public consultation on mobile TV. Deadline is September 22. (www.tra.gov.om)
  • United Arab Emirates (2008 08 24)
    The UAE Telecommuniacations Regulatory Authority (TRA) published a tender for mobile TV transmission services. Submission deadline is October 19th. (www.tra.ae/mobilereg.html)
  • Czech Republic (2008 08 19)
    Telefonica O2 Czech Republic, along with the Czech units of Vodafone and T-Mobile have agreed to launch a joint-venture for DVB-H based mobile TV services
  • Norway (2008 08 18)
    A consortium comprising Norway’s public broadcaster NRK and commercial broadcasters TV2 and MTG-- are planning a nine-channel line-up; on demand content and related services based on DMB technology for a Winter launch this year
  • Brazil (2008 08 14)
    Pay-TV operator TVA announced to launch commercial mobile TV services in 2009 after having tested the technology with Samsung, Motorola and Sagem mobile phones on an UHF frequency.
  • South Africa (2008 08 12)
    South Africa’s Minister of communications declared that the government will grant several mobile TV network licences.
  • Poland (2008 08 08)
    The Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) has officially opened a 30-day consultation period into mobile TV licences. Employing frequencies in the 470-790MHz bandwidth, the licences will be valid until the end of 2023.
  • Austria (2008 08 08)
    DVB-H signal available now in all Austrian regional capitals. After Wien, Salzburg, Innsbruck und Klagenfurt now also in Bregenz, Eisenstadt, Graz, Linz and St. Pölten.
  • South Korea (2008 08 03)
    The number of DMB-enabled receivers reached 13.69 million in June. Mobile phones accounted for 48.4 percent of all DMB subscribers.
  • China (2008 08 01)
    China Mobile buys 40,000 TD-SCDMA phones for Olympics from vendors including ZTE and Lenovo
  • Germany (2008 07 31)
    Mobile 3.0 is said to stop its DVB-H activities in Germany as they could not agree with distributors
  • Poland (2008 07 31)
    The DVB-H tender will be delayed as a new consultation phase will be opened after the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT) has ben involved in the process by the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE)
  • USA (2008 07 28)
    WRAL and Capitol Broadcasting Company’s (CBC) New Media Group are conducting a field test of MPH technology in the Raleigh-Durham, N.C. market. The trial will be supported by Harris Corporation, LG Electronics and Zenith.
  • Hungary (2008 07 27)
    Antenna Hungária has won the right to operate Hungary’s future DTT platform. It includes the right to offer DVB-H services on the third digital TV multiplex.
  • Singapore (2008 07 25)
    M1, SingTel and StarHub, together with the national broadcaster MediaCorp, are to jointly conduct a OMA BCAST Smartcard profile/DVB-H based trial in 08/2008. It should last 3 month and provide 6 dedicated channels to 300 users equipped with Samsung's P-960. Named technology partners are Alcatel-Lucent and Gemalto. (www.mobiletvtrial.sg)
  • Russia (2008 07 24)
    Sistemea selects NDS to protect its DVB-H service. The service is planned to start in Moscow and to be extended to 16 other Russian cities and regions. It shall be offered to all Russian MNOs.
  • Austria (2008 07 23)
    About 5.000 DVB-H subcribers of Austrian MNOs One, 3 and A1 one months after service launch (www.digitalfernsehen.de)
  • Poland (2008 07 22)
    The tender for Poland’s DVB-H frequencies for covering 31 towns and cities is likely to be opened in mid-August.
  • Ireland (2008 06 20)
    ComReg announced a consultation on the award of UHF spectrum in the Irish cities of Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Waterford to result in the launch of a nationwide mobile TV service.

    MEDIA BROADCAST announces commercial DVB-H start in Wien, Salzburg, Innsbruck und Klagenfurt together with MNOs Hutchison 3G Austria, ONE und mobilkom austria and 15 TV and radio channels
  • German (2008 06 01)
    Mobile 3.0 starts DVB-H test in Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Hanover

    Latvian Mobile Telephone (LMT) has established a DVB-H trial partnering with LVRTC, the Latvia State Radio and Television Centre. Technology partner is Thomson. The trial, which is expected to continue through 2008, offers four TV channels, plus pay per view and interactive services.
  • France (2008 01 18)
    Regulator CSA received 32 candidates for the 13 mobile TV DVB-H frequencies by the closing time for applications.
  • Germany (2008 01 16)
    DVB-H license granted to Mobile 3.0
  • Hungary (2008 01 09)
    T-Mobile Hungary and Vodafone jointly launched a DVB-H trial together with Hungarian broadcaster Antenna Hungaria based on a Nokia Siemens Networks platform and Nokia N92 and Nokia N77 handsets to up to 300 users.
  • Switzerland (2007 09 28)
    National regulator BAKOM grants DVB-H license to Swisscom Broadcast.
